Time, place and social environment are major essential elements in a story’s setting. Throughout a fiction or a drama, the setting allows a reader to view the mood, the character’s actions, and the time of the story. The three main components of the setting are important in a story because a reader can relate to the characters within a story. The novel Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury and the play “Master Harold and the Boys” are two examples of how the setting is a major element and has extensive importance in literature. The setting in Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury is set in a suburban city in the twenty-first century. The most important aspects of the setting in the science fiction novel take place in the future. Bradbury paints a picture of a futuristic world with technology, violence, and mind-control. The setting of the character’s lifestyles also illustrates the difference between the main character Guy Montag and the other character’s in the novel. For example, Guy is always described to be in a dark empty setting. Other people in the story were described as surrounded by technology and a healthy environment. For most of the novel, Montag’s mood is proved to be scared, confused, and angry through the description of how he viewed the world. In the play …show more content…
The smart use of setting transports the reader into the character’s world gives a sense of who the characters are and how they should be behaving. For example, when describing a setting of a character that lives in the South, a reader can imagine the character to have a southern accent.
