Maternity Leave in the United States
Like most people, I never considered what happens to working women when you are expecting a new child, until I became one. When you are expecting a new baby, the sheer number of prenatal medical appointments can be overwhelming and the closer you get to your due date, the more frequent they become. If you are diagnosed with any health complications while pregnant, the number of appointments can increase significantly due to the need to monitor the health of mother and baby. Your workplace may provide paid time off for these appointments, but the reality is that many women do not have this flexibility during pregnancy or after giving birth. This leaves many women facing the unenviable situation of taking unpaid time off throughout the pregnancy and often returning to work before they are ready. There is an opportunity here for the United States government to step up and become equal with the rest of the world by offering comprehensive paid maternity leave.
The United States is behind the majority of the rest of the world in that we are the only first world industrialized nation
