Introduction: Immigration is a major cornerstone of our society and many things we love have come from immigrants. By the end of this speech, I hope you’ll see why immigration is a positive thing in the United States. I have a good understanding of its importance, as many of my closest friends, colleagues, and even family members are immigrants or come from immigrant families, and they've opened my eyes to all the different things they’ve brought from where they're from. Immigration improves the American workforce, is much safer than many realize, and increases diversity and culture across the country. As immigrants enter the country, more job opportunities open up for them. According to Jeanna Smialek of The New York Times, without immigrants, the labor force in the United States would have declined by roughly 1.2 million people. Instead of regression, immigration has bolstered the labor force by an estimated 2 million people. The CUNY Graduate Center published an article stating immigration has improved growth in major parts of the country, including California's Silicon Valley, where the nation's top tech companies were founded. Companies such as Google were launched by Russian-born Sergey Brin, and eBay was created by French-born Pierre Omidyar. The same article noted that more than half of the U.S. start-up companies valued at over $1 billion have been founded by immigrants and have produced more jobs for the American people, contributing to the over 2 million job increase caused by immigrants.
