Matthias was chosen by Jesus to be one of His apostles. The word “apostle” comes from the words that mean “send” and “messenger.” Jesus chose twelve apostles to share the ministry of Jesus and preach the Good News of the risen Lord. Matthias the Apostle is the patron of carpenters, tailors, and reformed alcoholics. Matthias devoted himself to preaching all over Judea and Ethiopia for over thirty years. Matthias’s feast day is celebrated on May 14th. Matthias was martyred by crucifixion.
