Character Description
Mattie is a very shy and quiet fifth grader that has changed schools many times in her life. She finds it hard to make new friends and struggles to fit in. Mattie does not talk much because she was bullied in the past. She likes to write stories in her notebook. Mattie becomes Uncle Potluck’s custodial apprentice to avoid making friends. She writes about the needs of the school in her notebook. Mattie becomes friends with Quincy and starts making new friends in school once she starts trying.

Mattie and her mom move in with him the week before school starts. Uncle Potluck is funny and tells funny stories. He likes to talk a lot, and Mattie feels comfortable with him. He is the janitor at her school, and Mattie wants to be his custodial apprentice. He encourages Mattie to become friends with Quincy.
Plot
Mattie and her mom move around a lot. They decide to move in with Uncle Potluck the week before school starts for Mattie at Mitchell P. Anderson Elementary School. Uncle Potluck is a janitor at the school, and Mattie wants to become his custodial apprentice. She makes a plan to become his apprentice so she can avoid social situations. She starts to write down all the tips and needs of the school in her notebook.
Uncle Potluck’s neighbor Crystal has a niece staying with her for the summer. Quincy is close to Mattie’s age. They all think the girls could become friends. Crystal has to work nights so Quincy stays overnight at Mattie’s house. They get to know each other.
