Perseverance… never giving up. The problems in the story that Mattie faces, go hand in hand with this theme. Perseverance is a trait Mattie develops throughout the story. An example of this is when mattie goes to find food and water for herself and her Grandfather. She is left stranded in the middle of nowhere, with nothing. Mattie shows perseverance when thinking of solutions and going to find food and water. A saying that can relate to mattie's problem is when you get knocked down you need to get back up. This quote and example teaches us that we have to be strong and that we need to keep going.
