May Dodd is a very wild being and goes by only her path of rules; leaving her open to many predictions. One of the predictions that was established was that May Dodd would back out from marrying a savage and run off with the captain. I predicted this because in the book she said, “.. I have never in my life known such a powerful stirring of feelings,” (Fergus 92). This quote exemplifies the fact that she was beginning to have feelings for the captain that she never imagined of having. As well as, the captain and May having a common interest of reading shakespeare. During that time, the captain and May would show slight feelings for one another, but could not go too far because the captain was engaged. Towards the end of the journey, before may left to the savage life, May and the captain kissed. In one of May’s journals she explains that when John Bourke, the captain, kissed her she felt a powerful need for him. May Dodd was exceedingly tentative about the whole entire situation. One incident where you could see this is when the captain is talking to May about not marrying a Native American. He told May that she was too delicate for the frontier life and that inclines that he cares about May, allowing her to think more about not leaving.
