McKay’s use of poetics techniques blend together in the poem, “The Harlem Dancer”. In the “The Harlem Dancer”, McKay utilizes imagery, and diction to create a paradox setting and a comparison to African Americans with the dancer. Although " The Harlem Renaissance, was a blossoming (c. 1918–37) of African American culture", White people still viewed them as less than (Cooper). In the first two lines of the poem, it is revealed that the setting is filled with “youths”, “young prostitutes”, and a woman who is dancing “half -clothed” (McKay). The first four lines introduce the reader to the setting and the center of the poem, which is the dancer. The middle of the poem gives the reader a sense of who this dancer is.
