Annual performance reviews are vital to the business’ success as well as the employees. Performance appraisals help them to be forthcoming and honest in their relationship with their employees and collectively work together to improve and grow within their role. Supervisors must inform their employees and ensure that they have a clear understanding of what’s expected of them. The performance appraisal should highlight their own personal strengths and develop a solid relationship with their superior. By avoiding performance issues it decreases morale, decreases the credibility of management, as well as decreases the organizations overall effectiveness (Mcnamara).
In order to get the best results out of a performance appraisal, the supervisor should be prepared and have a plan in place to execute properly to breed good results. Tell the employee that you're initiating a scheduled performance review. Remind them of what's involved in the process. Schedule a meeting about two weeks out. The first performance review should be scheduled six months after the employee has begun employment. Give the employee the opportunity to speak first and allow them to give input of their experience, i.e. training, knowledge and execution of what they have learned.
