Medgar Evers, who was born on July, 2nd, 1925 in Decatur, Mississippi and died on July 12, 1963, focused on putting on end to segregation and racism. He was the third of four children born to James and Jessie Evers. Medgar grew up with his family and sibling in Mississippi where he lived in a family that showered him with love. Medgar ’s childhood shaped him as an adult since he grew up in the South where there was racial discrimination everywhere. Because he had been affected by segregation throughout his whole life he decided to fight against it because he grew up in this environment.

He died shortly after the assassination and was buried in Arlington National Cemetery. Later that year, he was awarded the Spingarn Medal1. He also got awarded with his own college, his own statue and much more. Out of all of these awards, something that he probably would have loved the most is that within ten years of his death, there were black students all over Mississippi Colleges. Medgar affected the lives of many others since he impacted the end of segregation in schools. Medgar connects to ROTHMC by Mildred T. Taylor as he was a phenomenal leader in the South. In the novel, Mary Logan or Mama most closely relates to Medgar since she even had a lesson in her class about segregation that resulted in her losing her job. Even though she knew it wouldn’t turn out perfectly she still decided to teach her students and especially Cassie about slavery and segregation. Mary also tells her kids always to be careful with whites especially the Wallaces since they made her lose her job as a teacher.
