When studying to be in the field of Nursing, it is hard to get real life experience with patients. In the past, students practiced IVs on themselves to improve their skill because there hasn’t been anything else to practice on before going to a real patient. Medical Mannequins allow medical students to improve their skill and get more comfortable to perform the best they can. Medical Mannequins have been around since the 1960’s, however, they are continuing to technologically advance the accuracy of human anatomy. From arms, full bodies, or a full functioning model, they have advanced dramatically over the years to help medical students improve their skills. Over the years they have become more and more advanced to be more human like. The Harvey cardiology mannequin was developed around the same time in 1968. It was capable of simulating 27 different kinds of heart conditions. This device has been testing the most out of any in history for measure of efficiency due to the fact that the heart an important part of the body and the health of a human. The first technological medical mannequins were developed based on the heart because the heart is such an important organ. Nursing students are able to monitor the breath sounds, heart tones, and palpable pulses of the mannequins. The Sim One was then developed during the Vietnam War to help medical students practice trauma. These mannequins were so advanced that they blinked, automatically moved with breathe, and pupils dilated, and even talked to tell the students what was wrong.
