Accepted standard BMI is 16 – 31. This BMI range is not applicable to minors and there is separate table for them. Overweight is a risk factor for Diabetes, Cardiac, renal and other degenerative diseases. Underweight may indicate anemia, acute infections, TB and respiratory diseases. Sudden decrease in weight may be due to cancers. Hence checking change in weight within 6 months along with BMI is a must.

BLOOD PRESSURE

Higher value in BP denotes Systolic blood pressure and lower denotes Diastolic blood pressure. The readings must be taken thrice. Any deviation from the normal rating (120 – 80) indicates some abnormality in Cardiac functioning and may lead to arterial diseases.

PULSE

60 to 90 is accepted as normal pulse rate. Irregular pulse may indicate presence of heart disease that could be further investigated by echocardiogram.

Decreased Hemoglobin signifies anemia which may be due to hyperthyroidism, liver cirrhosis, severe hemorrhage, hemolytic reactions and cancer. Increased HB may indicate temporary pulmonary disorders, congestive heart failure, etc . Increased WBC denotes infection or permanent leukemia. Platelets are essential for blood clotting. Abnormal increase in platelet may be due to cancer, acute infection, trauma, leukemia, polcythemia. Decrease in platelet count may be due to anemia, during cancer therapy and drug toxicity.

ROUTINE UREA ANALYSIS:

Microscopic study of urine tests is done for knowing the presence of protein, glucose, casts, ketones, creatinine, RBC, epithelial cells, pus cells, other deposits, PH value, specific gravity etc. Proteinuria in a diabetic or hypertensive person denotes nephopathy. Glucosuria in a diabetic suggests that the renal threshold level is affected and indicates uncontrolled diabetic. Hematuria (blood) may indicate stones, nephritis, tumors, prostrate disease. Pyuria (pus) may indicate cystitis, urethritis and prostatitis. Casts like RBC casts, granular casts and fatty casts indicate renal disease.
