It became clear there were disadvantages when the papacy became a huge influence and strength on matters of the state during the medieval period. Conflicts of power with emperors and fellow popes was disturbing as vicious attacks and violence were often the result. As such was the case of Gregory and Emperor Henry IV. Gregory believed the emperor should support his efforts on reformation, and Henry believed he should have the freedom to appoint bishops that would not only support him, but his empire. The conflict resulted in Henry deposing the bishop and appointing a replacement, and in response, Gregory ordered Henry to show face in Rome and if he refused, Henry would be deposed and his soul would be condemned to hell.
