The Megacity or the Megalopolis Are you familiar with mega-cities, or are you familiar with megacities? Perhaps you have been acquainted with the megalopolis terms? Most people will not look twice to notice the difference in mega-city and megacity. Well, the dash has been removed and for what reason? Others do not know the characteristics of a megalopolis, or that the ancient Greeks changed the notion of a megalopolis. Unfortunately a high percentage of people are unaware of the first megacities because they are not emphasized in history classes today, however, these megacities mirror the megacities of our time. By definition a megacity and a megalopolis are different, yet they can be used to resemble each other. The difference between these terms is that a megalopolis is a conurbation whereas a megacity is not. Nevertheless, megacities and megalopolis are both connected because they are extensions of metropolises. Now let’s discuss the fact that a dash was removed from the word megacity. All three of these cities had an amazing location that allowed them to thrive. Both Ur and Babylon in Mesopotamia near the Euphrates River which allowed them to have a virtuous water supply and trade. Rome wasn’t near the Euphrates, however, it was on the Mediterranean which also allowed it to have countless resources; water supply, and trade as well. Another characteristic that they all have in common is that they all had magnificent leaders. These leaders were able to manage these megacities and allow them to thrive in their prime. Some of these leaders were Hammurabi for Babylon, Cesar for Rome, and Gilgamesh for Ur. They also had an alright military that was able to fend off the city and keep it from being attacked and
