During the 13th century, Mendicant Orders were born and developed in an extraordinary way and they were named according to their characteristic features of “begging”. The most important Mendicant Orders were Friars Minor known as Franciscans, and Friars Preachers known as Dominicans. They are called by the names of their founders, Francis of Assisi and Dominic de Guzma’n (NTC, 2016: 89).
Franciscans characteristics were: living in simplicity, penance, poverty, and love for the poor; these were confirmed by the following sentence “The Lord granted me, Br. Francis, to begin to do penance in this way”, this was written in his testament and it was regarded as the Order of Penitents. He based his teachings on Matthew 6: 24-34 (http://www.religious-vocation.com/differences_religious_orders.html).
