For my reflection paper I will be connecting my job as a Mental Health Technician, where I have DBT groups in an inpatient facility, with this week’s video. In this first video, it revealed various information that I could take and apply for my job. One of the first ideas Yalom discusses is that in a group setting it is important to deselect people who will not be a good fit for the group. While I wish our facility could filter out certain people who could be admitted, like those who are homicidal and aggressive, I cannot control who cannot be admitted into the facility. The reflections and thoughts that one group member had in the video are like what the adolescent patients feel as well. Many of the patients will look out of the dayroom windows, staring at the new patient, which is incredibly intimidating. After this new patient is acclimated and they get to the day room, they say, “I was so scared of you all! Especially you!”, and everyone makes their judgments on one another, basing it on what the person says and what they do. When in reality, these adolescent girls do not realize that this person does not have 100% bad intentions, it is just transference and a lack of cohesion in the group. This is what happened to the group in the video, the members were making judgments toward Bob and Allen, saying that they were in competition with each other and that Bob was picking on Allen. All Allen did was state that one group member seemed to be uncomfortable, meanwhile, Bob believed Allen was being too protective of the shy girl (I cannot remember her name). In a neutral stance as a viewer, I did not think either of the men was doing anything
