Electoral System The electoral system I chose is proportional representation. This is because it is a more fair election method. In a proportional representation electoral system, less votes are wasted. When thresholds are low, almost all votes are used to elect a candidate. This makes people feel that their vote can actually have an impact, resulting in higher voting rates. Unless the threshold is low, or the district magnitude is high, any political party with a low percentage of votes has the ability to gain representation in legislature. This is necessary in a diverse nation like Canada. This is beneficial for the people because it ensures that all groups are included, and all opinions are heard. Proportional representation allows parties to present diverse lists of candidates. Proportional representation encourages the election of minority representatives. It is encouraged that parties include candidates that appeal to a wide variety of voters. It is also more likely for women to be involved in this political system. I did not choose first past the post because Minority groups do not get their fair share of seats, which is a disadvantage. Another disadvantage is that when a party wins fifty percent of the votes, it gets almost all the seats. This prevents minorities from representation. Where a person stands politically is determined by where they live, not what they believe in. In this system, a large amount of votes go to waste. People may begin to feel that they might as well just not vote since it isn't going to make a difference. In FPTP, one party can still hold power, even if it loses a great amount of support. This system also encourages the development of parties based on ethnicity. Women do not have good chances of being selected in a first past the post electoral system. Political Parties For the political party, I chose a multi party system. I felt that this system is better because a multi-party system allows each citizen to vote for the party that best fits their beliefs and represents their ideology. Canada is a very diverse country. A multi-party system is needed to represent all the different groups
