In Jurassic Park by Michael Crichton, one of the main characters, John Hammond, demonstrates dedication to building his dinosaur park. First, he spends enormous amounts of money in pursuit of his goal. This is shown when he buys a ridiculous supply of amber. The text shows this when the reader learns, "John Hammond has the largest privately owned stockpile of amber in the world" (Crichton). Unfortunately, he was so tenacious, that he did not evaluate the danger of his creation and put the lives of employees, guests at his park, and even his family in danger. First, he recruits his friend, Huck, to help him get through the challenges of the mission. “He sallied out to find Joe Harper, but failed of success. Next he sought Ben Rogers; he had gone fishing. Presently he stumbled upon Huck Finn the Red-Handed. Huck would answer. Tom took him to a private place and opened the matter to him confidentially. Huck was willing” (Twain). This shows that Tom recognized he needed a partner to find hidden treasure. Then, Tom went to the haunted house to look for treasure. “Well, alright. We’ll tackle the ha’nted house if you say so, but I reckon it’s takin’ chances” (Twain). Even though Huck is reluctant to get into dangerous situations to pursue their goal, Tom convinces him by showing that the reward outweighs the risks. Eventually, Huck and Tom figure out that Injun Joe left the treasure in the cave, and go in to find it. While both boys work together, the text states that “Tom went first, leaving deep footprints in the clay hill as he descended”essa (Twain). This again shows that he takes the lead in the adventures and is highly dedicated to them. They risk their lives so many times for the thrill of adventure and the treasure that they might get.
