Both Beowulf and Jordan earned a reputation for being strong and courageous. Beowulf got his reputation for killing 9 sea monsters, all while competing in a swim race. Beowulf is willing to use his strength to now fight a monster by the name of Grendel who is destroying the Danes’ mead-hall and killing all the warriors. Unferth, a Danish warrior who envies Beowulf for his successes, says to him, “You've been lucky in your battles, Beowulf, but I think your luck will change if you challenge Grendel” (245-246). Unferth resents the fact that he needs Beowulf's help to defeat Grendel. Beowulf was a god among men there was nothing stopping him no matter what. This is why warriors looked up to him as they saw no fear in his eyes. Michael Jordan was also a figure to look up to, a man among boys.
