She leaves him no choice but to go complain to the duke. His anger leads him to think of executing his own daughter. Demetrius is livid because he clearly sees that Hermia doesn’t love but he’s also committed to win her over. Lysander is not necessarily mad but he's tired of arguing and tired of being rejected by Egeus. His weary causes him recommends to eloping. Helena is intensely jealous of Hermia’s beauty and wish to look like her. Hermia made a mistake by telling her she’s going to elope with Lysander. Helena is so disoriented in love with Demetrius that she’s willing to betray her best friend.
Egeus chooses Demetrius to marry Hermia which causes Hermia sadness. Due to the choice Egeus made, tension builds between the two men. They both argue that they love Hermia more. Tension is build with Hermia and Theseus when he gives her an ultimatum. The tension level rises because the tone of the conversation went from who loves hermia more to execution.
