According to Ferry and Williams the key factors to a nation’s strength are export markets, a strong humanitarian and civilizing side, and naval warfare. All these concepts are very key to having a strong nation and being able to essentially hold your own. Ferry and Williams use in depth knowledge to show what they suggest is effective and can be proven. Export markets have shown to be very effective in the world today, and a strong humanitarian side of the power is good as well, this will make the community have stability and keep the people from fighting each other. Naval warfare has proven to be essential to the survival of a country, with a naval army they would have more power off land and be able to protect their borders more effectively. Export markets are probably the most important part of being a powerful and individual country. The need for export markets have grown to be very crucial even in today’s society. Export markets are important because they give your country the items and resources that they cannot produce on their own. In the document Ferry states that America has become “protectionist in the most extreme sense, because not only have these great markets, but also these great states are beginning to pour products not seen heretofore onto our own markets”. What he is basically saying is that America has grown strong and independent just based on the fact that they have a great import and export market, and he is telling them that this is what their country needs to be like and have people rely on our products as well. Import and export markets are also good because in my opinion they are essentially a form of security or insurance, here is how; if your country produces a product that no one else can produce then some countries that
rely on that product will not cause problems for you because if they did then you would have the power to just tell them that they will no longer get that merchandise. This also comes in a form of a massive amount of power; if you have the ability to do that then you are indeed a powerful country. The humanitarian standpoint is quite simple, this is important because to have a powerful country there needs to be economic stability and most of all stability between the countries people. If you have a problem with the people not being treated properly then there could potentially be an outbreak and worst case scenario a civil war. When other countries see this they will not want anything to do with you because you have no stability. Ferry states “What is this civilization which you impose with cannonballs? What is it but another form of barbarism? Don’t these populations, these inferior races, have the same right as you? Aren’t they masters of their own houses? You come to them against their will; you offer them violence, but not civilization”. The quote basically is saying that they need to start treating everyone equally if they want to be a powerful nation. To treat people unequally causes anger and
