There is no character I relate to more than the one-eyed cretin Mike Wazowski. As a young monster, he had one goal: to be a professional scarer. Despite being an outcast at school, he continued to work hard in his classes with his passion as his biggest motivator. He read every book and passed every written exam; however, he did not have the talent to be scary.
I saw myself in Mike: I felt the way he did when I played basketball. Similar to Mike, I put in extra work during the basketball season. I stayed hours after practice with the coach, joined various travel leagues, and shot hoops in driveway even when it was too cold to be outside. For Mike, it was as an assistant; for me, it was in music. Even though he was unable to live his original dream, he rebounded from the unfortunate situation with a greater spirit than before. He found a job sorting mail in the basement of Monsters Inc and then worked his way up the company to become a top-tier assistant. As for myself, I dedicated more time to practicing the flute. I started at the beginning: I learned my scales and rigorously did fundamental exercises. Eventually, I reached my goal of joining the top band in the school and even had the opportunity to play at a local cafe and at various churches in the community.
The first time I watched Monsters University, I cried because I knew that I wasn’t alone. I knew that there was hope. If Mike could rebound from his failure, then so could I. If he could drop what he had worked so long and hard for and succeed at his new passion, then so could I.
Mike reminds me to work hard with the qualities that I do have. He reminds me that life doesn’t take us where we want to go regardless of how hard we prepare for it. No matter where I go or what I do, I aim to work as hard as Mike Wazowski because perseverance and passion triumphs
