Collective defense is at the heart of the Alliance and to create unity among its members. The aim is to keep Europe safe by deterring attack. NATO strives to secure a lasting peace in Europe, based on common values of individual freedom, democracy, human rights and the rule of law. Since the phenomenon of crises and conflicts beyond the borders of NATO member countries can endanger this objective, the Alliance also contributes to peace and stability through crisis management partnerships. Russia also accused the Brussels-based NATO of neglecting its home turf to isolate Russia instead, leaving the Europe vulnerable to terror attacks.
