The destruction of the Song Dynasty was a direct result of the plague epidemic also known as the black death. Not only was the deaths of its people a result of the plague but also because of the Mongol rule. Its large population of people was a result of a catastrophic destruction of a civilization. By 1300, almost the entire population was hungry and the scarcity of food spread throughout the dynasty. (430) The plague lasted in China from 1300 till 1331 which resulting in 90 percent of the population having contracted the disease due to its rapid spread. (430) A group by the name of the Red Turban Movement included all people and religions of China in which they said the world was coming to an end. In order to end the chaos in all the regions, strong military power had to be enforced to regain control. A leader by the name of Zuh Yuanzhang claimed control as a distinguished commander in the Red Turban movement and drove the Mongols from China. In 1368, Zhu founded the Ming dynasty. (434) In order to keep such a large Dynasty under political and social power, it took a very complex administration to keep things going which was also unheard of the other regions such as Europe. (434) The Emperor did not wish to be seen as someone who looked over everyone, but rather to be known as a watchful and helpful eye to his people. In order to keep the subjects in order he placed local leaders, village chiefs, village elders and tax captains in all areas of China. (434) This created a social hierarchy that was based on sex, age and kinship. (435) Although it seemed the the Emperor had too much power it was almost an un-maned system since there were only around 15,000 officials compared to the 200 million people.
