Mini Mental State Exam (MMSE) The third test administered to Betty involved an assessment of cognitive skills in which she scored 29/30. This tool is commonly used to screen for dementia (Folstein, Folstein & McHugh, 1975). Her cognitive skills are very sharp and her responses were quick. Betty did not know the date for which one point was deducted from her score, however, she knew the month, year, day of the week. When asked to count backwards by sevens, Betty admitted that she was never good at math, nevertheless, she was successful answered the alternative question. No other accommodations were needed, she was able to complete all other sections of this test without difficulty. This part of the interview was performed via Facetime video teleconferencing.

Eight stages separate each phase one goes through from infancy to death. In each stage a person experiences an event that either has a positive or a negative impact on their personal growth (McLeod, 2017). For the purpose of this paper, the focus is on Erikson’s eighth stage: Ego Integrity versus Despair. During this time of slowing down and retirement, the person is faced with viewing their life as successful or with regret. The successful feelings lead to ending life with a sense of wisdom, allowing the person to end life without fear. The regretful feelings often leads to depression and hopelessness (McLeod, 2016). On a 1-10 scale with despair being one and integrity being ten, it is believed that Betty would score an eight. Her regrets are few and rarely dwelled upon. Her accomplishments and sense of completeness comes from raising a family and her continued relationships with family and
