Minamoto Yoritomo was the first shogun of the Kamakura Shogunate in Japan.
Yoritomo is the leader and founder of the Minamoto Clan. He was the leader of this Shogunate from 1192 to 1199 . The Minamoto Clan consists of feudal warlords, also known as Bushi. This clan was one of the four great clans of Japan. Minamoto Yoritomo was born on May 9, 1147, and died on February 9, 1199. During his time his clan survived many attacks and was a part of many attacks on other clans. Yoritomo’s wife was named Hojo Masako. She was his wife from 1179 to 1199.
There are some people that did not like Minamoto Yoritomo. Taira Kiyomori was one of the people that did not agree with Minamoto Yoritomo. In July of 1180 Kiyomori ordered his people to capture and execute, or kill Yoritomo. Minamoto Yoritomo heard word about about Kiyomori’s plans so he sent his samurais to attack Kiyomori and his men. In the article Back to “Early Japan” Chronology it states, “Yoritomo was more of a statesman than a military general.” With this the entire capital of Kyoto was brought into a war between two clans that are fairly similar. After the Taira Clan was attacked they chased the Minamoto Clan through the mountain ranges which resulted in Minamoto losing a large part of his army.
