Minnesota Dance Theater Critique Imagine a dim stage with six beautiful dancers dressed in light, flowy, knee length skirts the color of the sky on a partly cloudy day. The scene had a dreamlike quality to it that was difficult for the eye to understand. These ballerinas looked like they were so far away, yet they were only a few feet from the edge of the stage. This was my first impression of Minnesota Dance Theater, and it made quite an impact. Their fall concert series consisted of four separate works; Fallings, N.L.I.F., The City Called Wait, and Marbles. The first piece described above is Fallings, choreographed by Lise Houlton. Later four other men joined him in a very physically challenging dance. There were many layers in the piece with multiple solos,duets, and trios sprinkled throughout. It was interesting to see which relationships developed during the piece. However, I do question the intention of this section. At first, it seemed to have a competition narrative but moments of tenderness in the duets caused me to rethink that concept. It had a pleasant vibe paired with upbeat music arranged by ….. This piece, Marbles by … , brought back the balletic theme from the first piece by using pointe shoes and codified ballet movements. The reintroduction of pointe shoes brought back some balletic influences that were present in the first piece. The costumes were somewhat tie dyed green, blue, and purple outfits that included tight fitting tops and short skirts or pants. The movement itself was light and airy.
