My name is Brooklyn Telfer, and I am here today to talk about the misrepresentation in the media, we are all influenced by what we see on the screens even if we don’t realise it, so accurate representation is crucial in our generation. The misrepresentation of disabilities in the media, specifically film and TV, has been present for years throughout history, and although in recent years society has grown to be more accepting towards people with disabilities, they are still being misrepresented and discriminated against, which can harm their mental health and the way the rest of society views people who have disabilities. Movies have affected the way we think, look, and act, even if we don’t realise it. A blog by Platt College shows how we have changed because of films such as Bambi, which decreased the amount of hunting, and Jaws, which decreased beach tourism. Therefore, showing accurate representation is crucial because it shapes how we see things and people. People who are considered different are often already looked down upon and discriminated against by society. Imagine how you would feel that throughout your whole life, you were treated as less and inferior just because you were considered to be different. Movies such as Me Before You say that it is better to be dead than disabled. In this generation, we should have better representation, such as in movies like Run and Stronger, which both have a character who uses a wheelchair or is physically disabled without discrimination.
