Not only does Adela keep sending the letters, but she tries to make sure her letters aren’t trackable. “She never got any answers of course, because she never signed her name” (Jackson, 1941, p. 170) and wrote in simple block letters with a dull pencil. Adela didn’t realize that her actions were cruel because she thought she was doing her town a favor by sending these letters as if they were warnings, not devastating messages.

Miss Strangeworth clearly has no idea how cruel she is when she writes, “Didn’t you ever see an idiot child before? Some people just shouldn’t have children should they?”(Jackson, 1941, p. 169). The actions she make are very cruel to people by haunting them with the letters she writes, but doesn’t know it. Miss strange worth believes her town is full of evil people and is only trying to help. Adela thinks that her “warnings” help people instead of hurt them.
Some citizens can be mean to a town/ city but, Miss Strangeworth and the way she is proves that she is unaware, possibly mentally ill, is cruel and possessive over her heritage that she wants to influence on “her” town proves that she may never be a truly good citizen of the town she lives in. Adela is also a very lonely person, simply because her age is 71 and never was married… something to think about, does Miss Strangeworth not care, or has she lost her grip on civilization for the rest of her
