The misunderstood, Emotional Support Animals In this generation, people are really big on mental health awareness. There's always new ideas on how to treat mental health issues with things that are not controlled or addictive. One of these ideas is what is called an Emotional Support Animal. No matter the size, this can be anything from a dog to a bird. Emotional Support Animals play a big part in expanding new ways of treating mental health. It's always great to find a new way so people don't have to take scheduled medicine for the rest of their life, instead they can treat it with a lovable companion! These people were paired because they were described as at risk of social isolation. They studied for 12 months on these patients and support animals, which proved a decrease in patients anxiety and depression. They found an increase in oxytocin and a decrease in the stress hormone cortisol. The support animal and their referred owner were proved to have bonded over the 12 month period. The Emotional Support Animal System helps both animals and people by providing help for the owners and a safe and loving owner and home for the animal. Emotional support animals come in many different ways, take an example from the book “Dewey: The Small-Town Library Cat Who Touched The World” written by Bret Witter and Vicki Myron. Vicki Myron went through loss, survivor of abuse, and being a single mom was employed at the Spencer Public Library and found a kitten in the library’s overnight drop box. The kitten was strong and loving even though he was frostbitten, and cold. She admired the strength the kitten had and decided to keep him.
