Introduction
MJ Kidney is one of the nation’s leading, highly specialized dialysis clinic located at 1 Bay St. inside Staten Island’s very own Staten Island Ferry Terminal. Research was done to identify the organization’s mission, vision, philosophy, organizational infrastructure and leadership and management functions related to that organizational structure. The organization’s leadership style also revealed the theory base, which guided the operation of MJ Kidney. An extensive analysis was subsequently done to determine whether the leadership roles and management functions were being integrated based on this organization’s theory and goals.

The company if comprised of: (1) the President/ CEO, Mashal Saeed; (2) Vice President (VP), Jeremy Merchant; (3) Assistant Vice President (AVP), Dr. William Myers, and (4) the medical staff organization. The medical staff organization team consists of 3 world-renowned nephrologists, 5 registered dieticians, 20 nurses, 15 hemodialysis technicians, 10 social workers, board members, and management. Line structures, a bureaucratic organizational design, allow for authority, responsibility, and decision making to be distinctly outlined and communication is done through a chain of command, where bigger issues are dealt with the top of the chain (CEO, VP, and AVP). With this approach, MJ Kidney desires for improved overall communication within the healthcare team as well as improved patient outcomes and satisfaction. There is obvious division of labor with respects to each departments and roles. There is a clear, well-defined hierarchy of authority in which the superiors are separated from the subordinates i.e. medical staff on the unit including the nephrologists, RDs, RNs, SWs and ancillary staff. Authority is plainly recognized in this organization. A clear well-defined system of procedures and rules are also in place in which all staff are expected to follow.
Through extensive analysis of MJ Kidney’s components of organizational structure, leadership roles and management functions, it can be concluded that the facility’s organizational objectives can be met by use of Max Weber’s organizational structure. Components of bureaucratic structure can be seen at MJ Kidney as evidenced by division of labor between different departments and clear defined set system of procedure and rules. MJ Kidney also clearly identifies goals and objectives along with roles and expectations. These factors call for a successful and innovative organization.
