The object I chose to analyze was the MOCA:04-011 stirrup jar from the Mycenaean period in Greece (1650-1000 BC). I decided to go with this object because it was more unique compared to a regular looking vase/jar with just one regular spout. To begin with the material used in building this jar, it looks to be that of terracotta. The material of the jar is a natural brownish/orange color that is not glazed but appears to have a rougher feel to it, which is reminiscent in many other stirrup jars in the Mycenaean time period. The jar has a cylinder-shaped false spout with a flat disc on top, which is also connected to the handle. The actual spout on the jar is a narrow cylinder located on one side of the shoulder directly in front of the false spout, or halfway between the handles. …show more content…
Looking at the object in person, the jar was preserved for the most part and only had a few chips and broken pieces on the side with nothing of substantial matter. The jar has the normal wear on the handles and sides, with the paint fading on the outside of the jar the closer it got to the base. One can see this as due to the black paint being very dull and worn down around the neck of the base. The design of the jar looks to be made for ease of carrying, with the jar having the handles on top and a “no-spill” spout. In the photographs below, one can see how the stirrup jar is approximately .04m in width at the base and then increases to its largest diameter of about .125m just below where the handles are attached to the shoulders (approx. .025m below where handles are
