Modified Calendar Case Study

Recently, our new superintendent has challenged up to think of innovative ways to move our school district forward. He has given us a list of programs and initiative to consider. One of the suggestions on that list is year round school or modified calendar. There are a few other schools in our district that would like to try a modified calendar as well. However, our superintendent was very specific instating that 80% or more of the staff must agree to it in addition to 80% of the parents and community. In our first attempt to get started on this only slightly more than half of staff members were interested. In a second survey 70% of staff members were in favor of a modified calendar.

Alvin Brooks is an African American leader in our community. He is a retired principal and former superintendent of District One. He served as a principal for the high school in the North Florence community for more than 30 years before serving as superintendent of Florence District One until 2013. He is always open to new ideas and innovations that can move our schools forward. However, there is a long standing feeling of animosity between Dr. Brooks and Mr. Pipkins. Having Dr. Brooks on the committee will help us particularly at the community level since he is a beloved former principal in the community and knows many of the families.
Representative Terry Alexander (D) is an African American leader who often works closely with North Vista. He still currently resides in the community and is a champion for the schools. There has been no mention of his feelings toward a modified calendar. However, I feel that he would favor it as a way to help our students.
Richard Harrington is an older Caucasian who is the former owner of S&W Printing Company of Florence. For many years, Mr. Harrington dedicated his time and resources to helping and mentoring students at North Vista. He is currently the owner of an upscale antique shop in the city. He would be supportive of a modified schedule because of the potential benefits for our students. He is a voice of reason and his communication skills would be useful on the task
