Sally is a 50 year old, widowed Caucasian female, who resides alone. She is gainfully employed and is financially secured. The case study does not disclose her religious preference, but she attends church and is a member of their singles group. Sally also started viewing online dating sites hoping to find someone who would be compatible. She begins talking to Harry whom she met online and is going through a divorce. They had been talking to each other for approximately two weeks, prior to her sending him $3,000 to repair his car so they could meet. According to Butler (2016), Special Agent of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) states many individuals use dating sites to looking for vulnerable and lonely individuals luring them into fast money scams. These predators look for individual who meet the characteristics of Sally (e.g. over the age of 40, who are divorced, widowed, or disabled) (FBI, 2016). As seen in this week’s video Interview with a Serial Arsonist, John was a victim of sexual molestation as a child. He never sought mental health treatment to learn effective coping skill to overcome the traumatic events of the molestation. As a result, his acting out behavior leads him to: abuse substance (to numb the pain of the event), burglary, and creating a fixation setting fires (Laureate Education, 2016). The behaviors could also indicate he desire to have control over the situation, because he did not have control over his sexual abuse. Even though Sally was a victim of a money scam she has a lower risk for becoming an offender. Sally has no criminal record, history of abuse, or psychological history.
