While it was indeed uncommon for women to participate as soldiers in the revolutionary war because they were not allowed to, it did occur anyway. One of the most important Heroines of the Revolutionary war was Molly Pitcher. Because women participating in the war usually occurred by them disguising themselves as men and using aliases to hide their identities, many historians therefore debate the existence of Molly Pitcher and say that the name was just given as a general name in order to commemorate several women who carried water to men on the battlefield. However, many records indicate that her original name was Mary Ludwig Hays McCauley and that that she is known for her heroism particularly at the Battle of Monmouth in which she served
