What if monarch butterflies weren’t a thing anymore? “We don’t miss anything until we don’t have it anymore” as my mom said. This year, the freshmen will be taking multiple field trips to the International Butterfly Center to research different things about monarchs. The monarch butterfly is an insect that is interesting, and is currently facing the problem of population decrease. However, it can be solved by getting the word out there.
Background Information Monarch population has caught a sudden decrease in population. From having their population of 682 million monarchs, it went all the way down to 25 million in 2014. Somehow, the population is increasing. In 2016, when last recorded, the population has gone up to 150 million monarchs

One is that they run into moving vehicles. Everytime someone goes on a road trip, they always end up with some butterflies on their grills or windshields. Not everything is our fault. It is also their fault because of the fact that they don’t watch where they’re going. Junk science is another reason why the monarch population is decreasing. Basically, junk science is false statements that people make and other people believe. For example, if someone says that trees are bad for humans, and people actually believe it, they will start cutting down trees. With people believing in what other people say, it will only affect something, or us. That’s what causes the monarch butterfly population to drastically decrease. On the other hand, the removal of milkweed is a perfect example of junk science. Someone had come up with the statement that milkweed affects the monarchs. Since other people believed it, they started removing milkweed thinking it was gonna help the monarchs. In reality, it affected them, because the monarchs can’t lay eggs unless it’s on a milkweed. They will die and they won’t be able to lay eggs. The reason they can’t lay eggs anywhere else, is because the caterpillars eat milkweed.
