Serving people has been a life-long value instilled in Monte Hardy by his parents and continues to resonate in his life. As a hard of hearing person born to Deaf parents he has a unique view that enables him to understand both the hard of hearing and Deaf perspectives.
Monte Hardy has worked both in the public and non-profit sector over the last 30 years. Some of his successes in both areas have strengthened services to hard of hearing, Deaf, Deafblind, and blind people both in British Columbia and Ontario. Monte started working with the Deaf in the B.C. School for the Deaf in the residential program after he graduated with a Psychology degree in 1990. In 1994 he was promoted to Supervisor of the residential program and along with a strong team strengthened the training of staff to provide safe and accessible services for children and youth attending the school.
Some of the projects that he was involved in included revamping the policy and procedures, developing sign language standards for staff, and supporting staff in obtaining training to enhance their knowledge and skills. Monte was also involved as the content expert in designing Deaf-friendly residential homes that were being built in Burnaby. Services added to the menu of responsibility included: Deaf Access Office, Youth Transition program, Family Support Program, Social worker services for family with Deaf and hard of hearing children, and contract services.
