The overall main point of Montgomery’s essay and the one thing she wants to make sure I remember is that octopuses are intelligent, feeling creatures. She describes interactions with the octopuses that show understanding and care for humans. “This time I offered her only one arm. I had injured a knee and, feeling wobbly, used my right hand to steady me while I stood on the stool to lean over the tank. Athena in turn gripped me with only one of her arms, and very few of her suckers. Her hold on me was remarkably gentle.” I believe this shows how the octopus knows Montgomery was hurt, and was capable of showing empathy and enough kindness to be gentle with her when she was injured.
