One of my many memories of being in the military is engaging targets with the hated Mossberg 590A1 12-gauge shotgun while stationed in Germany. The shotgun is a very powerful deterrent to anyone burglarizing a home or using it as part of a regular duty day. The pump action shotgun uses a bar that is pumped to fire shot shells and slugs as a rifle. The shotgun has a capability to mount various optics and accessories used for combat or hunting even with an additional bayonet attachment. The beauty of the shotgun is that it produces an; rear end puckering and fear striking capability into a criminal with the audible pump.
Although this is a weapon with various uses, it comes with a painful price if not utilized correctly. The pain from recoil, whether from shot shell or slugs will cause bruising. There are however ways to limit the recoil and tame the shotgun. First there must be a proper fit. An off the shelf shotgun can be fitted to effectively engage targets.

The fit is very important due to the length and purpose of the shotgun. The manufactures know that fit is a major factor as well as recoil and a precision stock can be installed to change the length of pull and adjust the comb by cutting into the stock thereby accounting for various face thickness. According to gundogsonline.com (2017), the length of pull is the measurement, in inches, between the curve of the trigger and the edge of the butt stock. The length of pull also deals with the pitch angle of the stock, if it is level with the barrel to provide a better fit and comfort level and sight
