I found these five different works in Galleries I and II at the Joann Cole Mitte Art Building on 11/14. The title of this work is “Mother Oba”, and it was completed in 2011 by Janel Jefferson. The medium is acrylic and pastel on paper. I think this painting is showing the triumphs and struggles of Mother Oba’s (the lady shown in the picture) past, which eventually led to her success. The image at the very bottom may be a representation of Mother Oba’s baptism. All of the characters in this image are seen wearing white, a color that represents purity and cleanliness, while standing in water, which is commonly used for baptisms. It also reminds me of a triptych because the images are split into three sections. This drawing was created by Rand Renfrow in 2013. It is a risograph print. I don’t think this work has a particular subject; it seems like its purpose is to express or bring out the artistic value of the simple objects and shapes that we see everyday. This is a fine example of both abstract art and genre. When I first saw this drawing, my eyes were immediately attracted to the red, three-dimensional rectangle in the middle because everything surrounding it is blue and white. It looks like light pressure was applied to the artist’s pencil as he colored in the background while more pressure was applied to the shadowing of the 3-D objects in order to make them pop out. Here is another piece created by the same artist. The medium of this work is acrylic on canvas; and it was completed sometime during this year. This is another example of genre, but this work focuses on simplicity rather than abstraction. The lines and shapes of the objects are pretty normal.
