Within Kim Fu's story Peter longs to be a woman, but at an early age he (she) expresses what appears to surpass simply being a woman, he also wants to be a mother. Peter perceives being a mother as more feminine than being a woman, he (she) places motherhood at the pinnacle of femininity. Throughout the story Peter is fascinated to no end with motherhood and nurturing a child. At one time he strips himself, puts on an apron and does chores, at another he expresses a subtle jealousy towards a woman breastfeeding her child. Kim Fu skillfully adds believable nuance to Peter in her way of explaining his desire to become a woman through a longing for motherhood but she also manages to explain Peter's rejection of his prescribed sex as well.
