Until last year my only extra-curricular was wrestling, but I decided to try doing a second sport mountain biking. My experience on the mountain bike team has had a drastic impact on me.
Ever since I started high school me and my dad have not gotten along, we would rather not talk than think about how to fix it. It is not that either one of us has ever done anything unforgivable we just have different ways of thinking and have never found common ground. Both me and my dad have always mountain biked, but never together, even if we left at the same we would ride separately, which in hindsight was a horrible idea considering how often we crash. Once I joined the bike team we began to spend much more time together. He came with me to practice and rode with me, we began riding extra outside of practice together, and he would go with me to the races in monterey. We fought less during the season because we were spending so much time together, and even though it did not fix our relationship it is nice to have at least one thing in common.

I never made a real effort to change who my friends are and have always associated with the same clique. When I started the team I knew no one. I race with a club called cycling development, it includes most of the high schools in the area. Each high school is it’s own team but we all practice together. On the first day I was overwhelmed, over seventy riders from multiple high schools. From the first day I noticed a financial gap between me and most of the other riders. Some of the high level riders acted aloof instead of taking on leadership roles and helping newer riders like I would expect a varsity athlete to do. Despite early difficulties I continued to work to meet every rider on the team and made a lot of friends. I now feel prepared for when I start college and will have to make new
