Movie Analysis: Co's At Pelican Bay

There are numerous of strategies that CO’s at Pelican Bay use to control inmates or monitor them. However, some of the main tactics consist of separating the gang leaders from their foot soldiers into separate buildings to eliminate communication and having sharpshooters monitor every moment of when they are grouped up in the yard. Another way for CO’s to control the gang leaders was by holding them in small cells to break them down and only opening one door at a time so that there can only be one leader that can go in and out at a single time. This will make sure that leaders have limited access to communicate/ interactions with other inmates and staff having less risk of harm. It was also good to see the thoughts of gang leaders and what they felt was comfortable or a risk to them. Such as when Joseph was talking about he feels safer in prison then if he was released because he could be killed any moment for betraying the gang. Another interesting thing that the film did was actually take the time and explain ways for gang leaders to share information from one another in the SHU even if they have limited communication. On the other hand, the film lacked in trying to describe what are the benefits for gang members to enter the prison, like do they climb the rankings in their gang, do they get more pay, are their families living better lives because they go there, will they become future gang leaders if they go there? Instead, the film only states that gang members who go there are the worst of the worst and that if they went to the prison they earned the rights to. Overall, I would like the film to go in depth more about what are some of the real reasons that gangs wants to go there and what is their real motives are besides just learning how to be better
