They had to flee their home and go to Amsterdam, hiding from Hitler because they were Jewish. They have to go into hiding because there is a war. “I never thought I’d live to see the day when a man like Mr. Frank would have to go into hiding. When you think—” (542). Mr. Frank is a good guy and they don't think that someone like him should go into hiding like that.

“Never, never can we thank you. I don't know what would happen to us, if it hadn’t been for Mr. Frank.” (544). Mrs. VanDaan is saying that if it wasn't for Mr. Frank, they would most likely all be dead.
