In the short story “ Gryphon” by Charles Baxter Tommy’s 4th grade teacher who is a teacher at 5 Oaks elementary school in Michigan, Mr. Hibbler develops a cough. All of the kids know that he will be absent the next day, and he is as they expected but, they have a new substitute, Miss Ferenczi. She tells interesting stories and Tommy tries to believe her because he likes her because she is different. None else believes her so tommy tries to defend her but a few days later Wayne Razmer tells on Miss Ferenczi because she brought a tarot pack and he pulled the death card. Tommy fights Wayne because he believed her and Wayne got her fired. Mr. Hibbler’s class ends up in Mrs. Mantei’s class for the rest of the day. Tommy defends Miss Ferenczi because
