The class I observed was Mr. Lizcano’s, 8th grade, Physical Science class. The class is made up of 26 students, 12 boys and 14 girls. This particular class is advanced, and it contains six gifted students. There are no English Language Learners in this class, as well as no students with disabilities. The classroom has 15 two-student desks set up in three rows. There is additional sitting along the walls, where the lab stations are located. Mr. Lizcano has decorated the walls with science posters. There is one poster that exhibits the periodic table, while others range from the layers of the earth to lab safety rules. He is a gifted 8th grader, of average height and build. What made him stand out was the questions that he was asking Mr. Lizcano. While others sat around with blank faces, Student A was engaged; he sat forward and always asked for an explanation or an expansion on the information being presented. In my opinion this level of activity was motivated intrinsically. During this specific lesson, Student A makes the choice to ask, expand, and interact instead of sitting back and waiting for Mr. Lizcano to finish the lecture. This gifted student has the choice to be bored with a lesson that he might not find engaging, however, he chooses to make it engaging. Student A find the motivation from within himself to make the content being presented interesting. It is important to note that Mr. Lizcano, along with the rest of this class, encourages and is satisfied by Student A’s interests and interactions.
