In The Chosen by Chaim Potluck, trials and tribulations seem to run in the Malter family. Many men after having lost their wives and left to raise a young son by themselves would crumble, but not Mr. Malter. Instead, he rises to the challenge, and pursues life to the fullest. In the process, He also sets a good example for his son, and everyone else with whom he comes in contact. Mr. Malter’s perseverance, thoughtfulness, and loving attitude make him an incredible example for Reuven.
Mr. Malter exhibits patient, deliberate perseverance in every facet of his life. Despite loosing his wife when Reuven was still a baby, he threw himself wholeheartedly into his work and relationship with his son. Even in the midst of sickness, unimaginable stress, and sadness, Mr. Malter never ceases to display considerate concern for every person he comes in contact with, especially Danny. After seeing Danny for the first time after Reuven’s injury, he said; “I see you play ball as well as you read books, Danny. I hope you are not as violent with a book as you are with a ball.”(pg. 84) He forgave Danny from the start. Mr. Malter carefully keeps Danny’s identity a secret while suggesting books for him to read, and warmly accepts him into the family circle when Danny and Reuven become friends. Although Mr. Malter does not always agree with Danny’s familys beliefs, traditions, or principles, he never councils Danny against his father’s will, but graciously and wisely instructs him in a way that corresponds with his Father’s standards. This thoughtful attitude despite personal difficulties is an admirable trait Mr. Malter
