The old knowledge that he has learned on carried along with him for years does not go to waste. Although the truth was different that what they had expected, his old knowledge will always be of some use to him in his life, and he can pass it along to his apprentice; Clay Jannon. Moreover, Penumbra accepts the new knowledge that Clay is presenting to him in the form of technology to help solve MANVTIVS and is willing to incorporate this into the Unbroken Spine to help them solve other codes in a more effective and efficient manner. In the novel, Penumbra displays that he is trying to adapt to and accept the concept of new technology, when the reader sees that he has bought a numerous amount of e-readers to help him get an idea of how this new idea of online books works. As his plan to bring new knowledge into the Unbroken Spine fails, he realizes he must take it upon himself to do so. This is to help him develop an understanding and a sense of new knowledge, which is ultimately going to aid him in his mission to solve MANVTIVS before his time comes.
