We live in a world where people don't stop to take in and appreciate the good they have in their lives. We just live life and let the good things pass us by. We don’t realize that even the smallest thing is a gift for us. My friend and I interviewed my friends grandfather, Egon Pfeifer, a Holocaust survivor. After hearing his story I realized that we shouldn’t take what we have for granted, because somewhere in the world there is someone who is begging for what we have. When Mr. Pfeifer was around seven years old, he had to live through the rough times of the Holocaust. He went through things we can only begin to imagine. At a very young age Mr. Pfeifer lost the thing most important to him, his family. The Nazis took his parents and brother away from him and he had to live and grow up without them. I lost my parents and brother and was starving for a family. Having a family is most important because without them there's no love, no support and your lost.”
Mr. Pfeifer opened my eyes to how wonderful it really is to have a family. Along with many other kids my age, I am not the biggest fan of my family. Now I see that we shouldn't take our families for granted, rather we should love and appreciate all the good they bring into our lives because one day we might not have them there to love and support us. Growing up during the Holocaust, there wasn't much opportunity like we have today. People were struggling to survive and didn't have the time to get the education they yearned for. It was either shelter or an education for them. As a young child, Mr. Pfeifer dreamed of becoming an engineer, but with the terrible conditions of the Holocaust he wasn't able to go to school. He never had the chance to get the education he needed to be able to fulfill his dream.
