Ladies and Gentlemen of the Jury, as we stand before you on this fine day, we wish to seek justice for Mrs. Helen Robinson, a woman unjustly hurt and diminished by the slanderous accusations of the defendant, Ms. Mayella Ewell. The assertions on behalf of the defendant have not only wronged the plaintiff, but have obscured the truth of such dire circumstances. Ms. Ewells claims she directly assaulted Mr. Tom Robinson, husband to Helen, under the accusation of rape. Not only are these claims wholly false, but they are entirely implausible. According to the defendant, Mr. Robinson, an African American male, was a regular acquaintance of the Ewell household and, many times, Mayella had beckoned the young man to complete odd jobs and chores for her. …show more content…
Mr. Tom Robinson, as a child, had lost his left arm in a terrible accident, forever being left disabled. In his physical state, it is an impossibility that Mr. Robinson would have been able to incapacitate and injure the defendant in the ways previously described. Furthermore, Ms. Ewell was fully aware that her accusations were false, and were intended to shroud the truth. And, with the weight of Mayella’s accusatory statements leading the jury to couple with our time’s racial prejudice, Mr. Tom Robinson was sentenced to death. This sentence devastated Mr. Robinson’s life and inflicted great hardship and suffering upon the Robinson family and Mrs. Helen, bringing us, ladies and gentlemen, back to the slanderous accusations at issue. Following the catastrophic propositions for Tom Robinson’s future, Mr. Robinson was taken away from his family, leaving Mrs. Helen Robinson to become the sole breadwinner for her and her children. However, because of the muddying of her and her family’s reputation due to the indictment of the former Mr. Robinson, Mrs. Helen found it difficult to find employment - a task which was already quite laborious as an African American woman during this time of
